Using big data and technology to advance precision irrigation practices
A global water crisis is predicted. Indeed, some believe it has already arrived. Either way, we need to get smarter about how we use our water. Traditional irrigation practices are inevitably wasteful of water. SWAN Systems utilises technology, data from a range of sources, and scientifically rigorous modelling to predict the upcoming water requirements of irrigated crops. Such precise management of water application ensures that plants receive the right amount of water, when it is needed, without waste.

Tim is a founding director of both SWAN Systems and AFS Agriculture, a specialist agricultural consultancy firm providing consultancy services to innovative farmers and horticulturalists. Tim has over 25 years of experience in agriculture and horticulture. After University studies, Tim developed and managed agricultural enterprises in the North of Western Australia. In the early 2000’s he started growing horticultural crops using precision technology, and since then he has focused on adapting the technology to other irrigated crop types, including fodder and turf. Recently, Tim and the team have developed SWAN Systems, a cloud based management solution for irrigators that harvests data from a selection of sources, including flow meters, soil moisture probes and weather stations, then calculates future irrigation needs based on weather forecasts and crop requirements.
Ivor is an experienced agricultural scientist and manager, having worked in the agriculture industry since 1991, first in agricultural management roles in Zimbabwe until 2005, then moving to Australia to work as an agronomist and manager. Ivor joined the team at AFS Agriculture in 2012 to work on developing an irrigation management system for a large scale agricultural project in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. Combining his experience in programming with his knowledge of irrigation requirements, Ivor designed an irrigation management system to enable mine dewater to be used to grow fodder crops next to an environmentally sensitive area. This work was the foundation for the development of SWAN Systems. Ivor now devotes the majority of his time to the ongoing development of SWAN Systems, ensuring the platform continues to meet the needs of irrigators.
