Integrated landscape science and management
BY INVITATION ONLY
Date: 13th & 14th March
Overview:
Building Capacity in Integrated Landscape Science in SA
Day One - Integrated Landscape Science and Management Forum: A Showcase of National Initiatives and Products
Context:
Researchers and natural resource management planners now explicitly recognise that successful management of regional natural resources requires an integrated approach and application of systems science on the landscape scale. The aim of this forum is to learn about integrated landscape science programs and projects being developed across Australia and to discuss future steps for the science within SA. Eminent scientists have been invited to present their centres of excellence and to answer questions on how to develop a similar research capability in SA.
Objectives:
- Share information on emerging science and tools for integrating our understanding and management of natural resources
- Identify improved NRM outcomes from new development in integrated landscape science,
- Explore what South Australia could do to better position itself to take advantage of and develop its own capability in integrated science, and
- Hear about what makes for successful clusters of activity in this field.

Day Two: Integrated Landscape Science and Management Workshop: Building a Compelling Case
Context :
A landscape science task group has been established to develop business and science cases for integrated landscape science in SA. The purpose of ACILS is to undertake world-class science, to integrate our understanding of how landscapes function and respond to pressure (including climate change) and management over time. It will do this specifically to assist managers and the community make better informed management decisions.
ACILS aims to be a nationally significant, high performing team of researchers, teachers and communicators who embrace the love of learning that brings new knowledge to the conservation and management of our landscapes. It will achieve this through:
• Coordination of scientific endeavour, in partnership with managers and policy makers, to
• Improve and embed the ideals and processes of using evidence-based decision making, and
• Encourage stakeholders to advocate for new knowledge, skilled people and better application to the management of our landscapes
Objectives:
• Explore what science is required to create a credible case for an Australian Centre for Integrated Landscape Science
• Develop ideas on how to build a network of agency staff, NRM Board staff, (consultants, eg Rural Solutions etc) and others who can take the tools and ideas developed by the Centre and adopt them
• Explore what would attract potential participants in the Centre and a broader network to becoming active in the Centre.
