Water Industry Placements

Building the Workforce

ICE WaRM Industry Placement Programme

Connecting Study with Experience

ICE WaRM is committed to drawing together expertise from a variety of areas to develop skills and knowledge in water resources management.  As part of this aim, ICE WaRM offers the ICE WaRM Industry Placement Programme, in which universities and the workplace collaborate in professional development, mutual knowledge sharing and business success.

A crucial requirement for organisations who want to to remain at the leading edge of their work  is to develop talent and expertise while remaining on top of the projects at hand.

ICE WaRM can help by providing an efficient resource solution - students who want to to take on industry placements.

Students who undertake the Postgraduate Programmes by ICE WaRM's shareholders Universities can choose the option of completing an industry placement, which will count towards their degree programme.

Students can choose to do a minor or major industry project, the former of which is equivalent to 2 courses (approx 300 hours of student effort) and the latter being equivalent to 4 courses (approx. 600 hours of effort).

Both projects can be either industry-based where the student is placed in the work place, or industry-sponsored where the student completes the project at university and hence with access to academic resources, expertise and guidance.

Whether students choose a Minor or Major Project, there is mutual benefit for the student and the organisation.

For those already working in a water-related organisation, there is scope for accommodating an Industry Project through the organisation (pending University approval of the project). In all cases, students considering their Study Option should consult their Program Director in the first instance

The Students

The students are experienced water professionals in their own right (with fluent English skills if a foreign national), who  will have completed one year full-time of coursework studies.

What type of placement might your organisation offer?

An organisation might offer a placement to a student that is:
  • a project of current concern;
  • part of on-going internal research and development programme;
  • something mutually agreed upon between the host organisation, student and home university.

The Benefits

  • Taking on a Masters’ student is a cost-effective way of completing work or research
  • Host organisations have an opportunity to identify new talent
  • Host organisations retain intellectual property rights over any new developments
  • Host organisations benefit from the knowledge and enthusiasm of the students as well as from the link to academic experts in the universities
  • Longer-term placements allow for the productive integration of the student and the project with the host organisation’s business objectives
  • Students have the opportunity to link learning to real industry needs and applications and benefit from the exposure to a working environment and its operations
  • All necessary insurance cover is covered by the university
