Context
The Murray Futures Riverine Recovery (RRP) project aims to deliver a methodology to protect, enhance and rehabilitate signifi cant aquatic (ecological) assets of the River Murray to maintain all native species currently found in the region. For the project to achieve this, the Goal Setting plan will defi ne the current ‘river health’ (as a benchmark) and set goals and targets to protect critical elements of the riverine environment based on the environmental, economic and social values. It will allow river health to be measured and riverine environment to be scaled down during the dry years and revived during wet years.
This project is to be planned over the next 12 months, but there are important decisions that need to be made now. With a number of technical experts from the region, DWLBC would like to develop the ecological goals as a fi rst step in the planning process of the RRP. The aim is to identify what species and habitats are currently most under threat that the RRP should be focusing on. The prioritization projects undertaken in recent years will be an important basis for this work. The information obtained from this workshop will be used to build on this data set for site selection.
Further refi nement of the intelligence gathered at this workshop will be undertaken in the coming year, which will drive further investment decision of the Riverine Recovery Project.
Workshop Goals
1. What are the important ecosystems of the South Australian River Murray?
2. Within those, what areas and species need to be targeted right now?
3. What principles should be adopted to prioritise on ground works of wetlands?
4. How should these ecological systems be protected?
